Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life – Jn 4:13
I am reminded of these words of Jesus over and over again lately. Rain is such a blessing and to some, at times, a curse.
Noah held on to a promise. In obedience he built the ark even in the face of ridicule. And because of his obedience to God his family and all of our precious animals were spared when the floodwaters started rising. People must have panicked and pleaded with God to make the rain stop. But God had a plan. He could see the big picture and He knew that mankind would ruin themselves for eternity unless they were stopped. And so the heavens opened up and it rained!
Here at Mseleni, as in the rest of Zululand, we are facing a terrible drought. Our lake has dried up to the point where the water pump can no longer reach it’s life-sustaining amanzi. To put things in perspective – Lake Sibhaya is the largest freshwater lake in South Africa. We are situated a few kilometres from it. And it is drying up. For two months our community has been without water and here at the hospital where we are based, having enjoyed the respite of borehole water for as long as it lasted, we are going on day 10. But not only is our community experiencing a physical drought, we are also going through a period of intense trials and testing – our spiritual drought.
Amidst the tears and questions of “why?” all around me, I am reminded that He is good. When loved ones pass away, when terrible tragedy strikes, when our crops fail – He is good. Jesus warns us not to look to temporary things which satisfy our thirst for but a minute and then leaves us frustrated and longing for more. He invites us to drink of Him, the well of eternal life. He promises that His water is everlasting. Is ever satisfying. And we will thirst no more.
Dear friend, is your thirst truly quenched? Are you satisfied? Even when the floodwaters rise up all around you, can you stand?
The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. – Is. 58:11
