BUTTERFLY HOME

"Caring for orphans with palliative needs"

Butterfly Home is Izandla's foster care home in Ingwavuma where we provide end-of-life care to abandoned or orphaned babies. These babies are one of the most vulnerable groups within the orphan community as they need special medical care.

Parents, especially young single moms, often feel overwhelmed when they give birth to a baby who has a life-limiting condition or severe disability such as infants with congenital heart defects (often the case with Down Syndrome babies), Trisomy 18 and 13 as well as children with end-stage HIV complications.. Without proper counselling and family support many of these special needs babies end up abandoned or left to die in a government hospital without love and individual care.

After having loved and lost a baby in this way, the Izandla family felt the call from God to provide a safe haven for these little ones. Thus Butterfly Home was created in 2018 where we provide the love and expert medical care that these babies require in a homely environment without the need for a hospital placement.

We currently function as a foster home but have plans to register and grow the home into a full hospice in the future. We have a team of 6 caregivers, a fulltime occupational therapist, doctor, social worker as well as various volunteers.

Our babies are from all over South Africa and our team personally travels to fetch each child and learn about their routine and care requirements before bringing them back to Ingwavuma. Some of our babies were found dumped in bushes, toilets, abandoned in hospitals or left to starve at home. Apart from their chronic special medical needs, most have endured severe neglect, starvation and abuse.

Our heart is to love these little ones as our own, help them heal emotionally and physically, and learn to trust again as they enjoy their last months or years on earth. We believe that every child belongs in a loving family and with the needed love and care some of our babies start to thrive and will survive longer than initially thought. For those little ones we try to find loving permanent families and work closely with private adoption agencies.

Butterfly home is a special place. There is lots of love, laughter and loss all wrapped up into one beautiful little home.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress. James 1:27
